:: entering 2013 I set myself a personal challenge: read one book each week this year; 52 in total. why? if you read well you write well. the essence of this series is about books I read + that you should read… thus, ‘Read It’ ::

Book #2: // The Hunger Games [Book One], by Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Games is a young adult cult book series by Suzanne Collins. If you haven’t heard about these books + the film(s), you’ve been living under a rock.

The book series was a hit in 2008 + in 2012 it was adapted to film (with many movies to come) + smashed the box office – an amazing film! But it took me until a lovely friend bought me the book series for Christmas to actually read about these beauty’s.

Written in the voice of Katniss Everdeen, it tells the tale of her experience in ‘The Hunger Games’ – a ‘game’ where a boy + girl from each of the 12 districts enter the arena + the last person alive is the victor. The games are broadcast live into each of the districts, with everyone seeing the killings + more, while monitored heavily by the ‘Capitol’.

The book begins at the ‘reaping’ (where they choose the boy + girl to enter the games) of District 12. The main two characters in this book are Katniss + fellow district competitor, Peeta, as they fight to survive… + you will fall in love with them.

To be honest, this book took me by complete surprise because I don’t usually enjoy post-apocalyptic style books. But, unlike other books this one is easy to read, cleverly written, + the storyline drew me in. More than that though, I think it’s because despite being set in the future, it still has the aspect of humanity that we can all relate to.

It’s definitely written with young adults in mind + is not hard to see why it became a bestseller.

You will laugh, cry, ‘nawww’, get angry, feel relieved, + want more… Which is why next Friday’s ‘Read It’ post is about the next book, Catching Fire. Because I dove straight into it wanting to know what happens next..
